The search engine is not an ordinary one as it looks at the first glance; it is more interesting and interactive than other search engines. Infact, apart from being a search engine it also serves as a social networking site where the user can make friends, share links and can do much more. Wikia search is the brain child of Jimmy Whales decided and the funding for the site is done by Amazon.com. The co-founders include Angela Beesley. The present CEO is Gil Penchina. Wikia search has gone through a lot of revamping and finally on 3rd June 2008, an all new search engine emerged with some advanced features including better screen display and search rating facility for the users. Jimmy Wales announced he is shutting down Wikia Search in March 2009: "In a different economy, we would continue to fund Wikia Search indefinitely. It’s something I care about deeply. I will return to again and again in my career to search, either as an investor, a contributor, a donor, or a cheerleader. But for now, we will be closing the doors on the Wikia Search project (as of March 31, 2009) and will be re-directing and refocusing resources on other Wikia.com properties, especially on Wikianswers. Join me there to help provide freely licensed answers to all the world’s questions."
Wikia is surely different from other applications, not in terms of search quality but in terms of outlook and features. The home page of the site is pretty clean and less crowded as compared to other search engines. One can edit and comment on the existing search results. One distinguishing feature of the search engine is that it allows the users to rate the search results to help other users and find the most accurate search results, thereby making the web search easy and precise.
The outlook of the site is pretty appealing. The best thing about the layout and design is that the site is not overloaded with irrelevant advertisements and information. The options are user friendly to make web searching quick and less complicated. The smiling blue cloud on the home page makes the site “appear” user friendly. Add to this, the ease of navigation.
The registration process is appreciably quick and easy. All one needs is a genuine e-mail ID, password, birth date and gender. Users can also search the web without registration, but it is required if one wishes to create an account in the social networking application.
All the services can be enjoyed without spending a single penny. Even the registration process is free of cost. Currently no advertisements exist.
Wikia search is good for those who wish to make their search quicker and easier. But the search results created by the engine are not as advanced as provided by Google. Despite featuring editing and annotating options, the most important of all, the search result, is not accurate enough. Though the search engine fails to provide pertinent search results for complex search, nonetheless one can find relevant results for less complex ones.
